Hard work and perseverance pays off for Surrey taekwondo studentsSurrey Now Newspaper MAY 28/18 EDITION
Two weeks of free classes make it easy to give Twin Dragon Taekwondo a try

When Twin Dragon Taekwondo’s students made their first foray into a major competition recently, they didn’t quite know what to expect.
So when the family-operated Surrey club returned home with some significant recognition, they were thrilled.
“We took 8 students to the 2018 Island Open in Parksville, and they did really well – they all placed in the medals,” says Angela Humphrey, who with husband Jason Humphrey have been welcoming students of all ages and experience levels since 2015. “A lot of the clubs attending from the Island and Mainland have been competing at this level for years. It was a really great experience.”
While celebrating their students’ competition success, it’s individual rewards – whatever those may be – that resonate most with the Twin Dragon team, Angela says, pointing to their motto: “Persevere, and you can accomplish anything!”
As instructors, their goal is to help students improve their mind, body and balance while they train, supporting students as they work toward achieving their goals.
A family-based martial arts school
Proud to be a family-based martial arts school, Jason and Angela are both on the floor instructing, along with their eldest daughter, Alanna. Jason and Angela’s other two children Nakita and Leland (also holders of Black Belts) also love to help out assisting the students with their training. This family approach extends into the student base, where they often see siblings or parents and children having fun – building self-confidence, focus and fitness – together.
“When new visitors come into the school, they feel that caring atmosphere,” Angela says. “We see the potential in each of our students – their unique strengths – and tell them, ‘It’s not about the medal around your neck, it’s that you go out and do your absolute best every day.’”
But that accessible, community-based setting doesn’t mean Twin Dragons instructors are any less experienced or professional. A member of the
World Taekwondo Federation, all instructors hold current WTF Black Belt certifications.
Try Taekwondo today!

Recognizing that starting a new program, with new people in a new setting can be daunting no matter what your age, Twin Dragons offers prospective students two weeks of free classes to see if it’s a good fit, Angela notes.

And classes are ongoing, so there’s no need to wait for a new session – stop by for a visit today or check them out online a twindragontkd.net or on Facebook!

Back to school, back to sportSurrey’s Twin Dragon Taekwondo invites families to get active together

Back-to-school time is a chance for kids and youth to get learning again, but a martial arts club in Surrey is doing its best to provide education for the whole family.
Promoting both a family atmosphere and affordable ways to get everyone active comes naturally to the Humphrey family at Twin Dragon Taekwondo, running out of the Port Kells Community Centre.
Master Jason Humphrey, who this summer successfully tested for his fourth-degree black belt, and wife Angela, who just achieved her third-degree black belt, oversee the club, which is celebrating its third anniversary.
The summer test also saw each of their children step up to the next level of black belt: daughter Alanna, 24, reached her third dan, while her sister Nakita, 12, and brother Leland, nine, each earned their second dan.
Fun and fitness for the whole family
Twin Dragon makes it easy for families to join the fun.
“We’ve managed to wrangle some parents who have been sitting on the sideline for up to a year watching their children reach their goals. I think having us as a family, it opens the eyes up to other families,” Angela says.
Here’s some ways you can get involved through a back-to-school special on now through Sept. 20:
  • New students to the club, of any age or experience level, receive two months of instruction plus a free uniform for $79 plus tax, nearly 50 per cent off the regular fee
  • For parents or siblings unsure about whether taekwondo is for you, the club is also offering two weeks of classes free to allow people to try it out
  • The club’s regular rates provide discounts for multiple family members
Whether it’s siblings or moms and dads with their kids, the various promotions offer options for multiple family members to get onto the mats.
“For us it’s not about the money, it’s about getting the families out there training together and learning something new and having fun,” Angela says, noting that people at similar skill levels work out at the same time. “We’re actually blessed that way because of our class schedules parents can join the students in the classes.”
While the back-to-school special runs only until Sept. 20, the club accepts new registrations at any time of the year. For now, it’s “back to school, back to sport, but we’re open throughout the year.”
